Benjamin spends his spare time writing science fiction stories, and he has recently completed a story called Yeast Lords, which centers on a hero named Bronco, modeled after his long-dead father.

At various times, portions of Yeast Lords are seen as Benjamin imagines them. Bronco is obliquely masculine, and he valiantly struggles with a villain over yeast production.

At a two-day writing camp for aspiring fantasy and science fiction authors, Benjamin attends lectures by his idol, the prolific and pretentious writer Ronald Chevalier.

Chevalier announces a contest for the writers, in which the winner's story will be published nationally.

After encouragement from fellow camper Tabatha, Benjamin submits Yeast Lords. Tabatha shows the story to her friend Lonnie Donaho who runs an ultra low-budget video production company.

As Chevalier reviews the stories from the campers, he gets a call from his publisher, rejecting his latest manuscript. Panicked, he picks up Benjamin's story, and it sparks his imagination.

Chevalier changes Purvis' Bronco into Brutus, an extremely effeminate and comically flamboyant hero, changes the other character names and title, but otherwise leaves the story intact.

His publisher loves it, and the novel is rushed into production under the title Brutus and Balzaak. Portions of Chevalier's version are now seen playing out alongside Benjamin's original vision of the story.

At the local premiere of Donaho's version of Yeast Lords , Benjamin is nauseated to see how badly Donaho has adapted his work, and he abruptly leaves the film with Tabatha.

They go to a bookstore where he discovers Chevalier's plagiarism after reading a paragraph from Brutus and Balzaak.

He confronts Chevalier at a local book signing, and assaults him with some merchandise Chevalier had offered him in exchange for keeping his theft quiet.

Two policeman hustle him out of the store and he is placed in jail. Judith comes to visit her son in jail to give him his birthday present.

She hands him a box of manuscripts, all officially bound by the Writers Guild of America. She explains that she has been registering all his stories with them since he was seven years old, thinking they would make a nice keepsake for his children.

Yeast Lords is one of the registered stories. Copies of Chevalier's novel are unceremoniously dumped from store shelves and replaced with Benjamin's original novel.

Gentlemen Broncos: I'm not seeing results.

I guess I think a little more lo-fi than that. I think that most of the title work that interests me is stuff you have to photograph, and those have been the ones I've always enjoyed, like the opening sequence to To Kill A Mockingbird.

There is a manifesto-like quality to your sequences where the emphasis is on humor; where does that come from? That was the weirdest thing and Kelly Freas had all kinds of junk like that, and it kinda blew my mind.

I come from a big Mormon family of six boys and was always making really lame karate movies on the trampoline with my brothers.

Later on I actually started interning as a camera assistant with a cinematographer my mom had gone to high school with. So every summer from the time I was 14 I would work as a camera assistant, like as a camera loader, on whatever he was working on, whether it was a commercial or documentaries or small feature films, so I had a little production experience before I went to college.

I really didn't like what I was working on though and thought a lot were just a lame waste of film, so I decided that I needed to write my own comedies.

That's when I shot Peluca , which is the short film that inspired Napoleon. That was the foray into filmmaking. For Nacho , I'd been a big fan of the lucha libre masked hero wrestling films and after Napoleon we learned about a Mexican friar who was moonlighting as a wrestler to raise money for an orphanage.

It was a property that Paramount had bought and we got to go write it with our friend Mike White, and luckily I was already a big fan of that world.

So much of Broncos is autobiographical. I mean, the mother character is very similar to my own mother, who made popcorn balls and would make me and my brothers go sell them and she also worked for a modest nightgown company.

My wife has a cousin who lives up in Alaska, he's 15, and for a long time he'd been writing really messed up science fiction stories that bring his mother to tears all the time.

We read a couple of them and they were I mean I could really relate to this kid in a weird way, and we just thought it would be a good jumping-off point — the story of a misunderstood artist, trying to do stuff that he was passionate about.

I've always wondered how real directors do it. I do a lot of line readings when I'm directing, doing all the voices of all the characters in our films, and I'm fortunate enough to work with people that don't completely hate me for that.

Immediate family. I really do take my cues from life and I guess I'm really mining people that I know.

Most of the characters that populate our films are loosely based on people that we know now or people we grew up with because so many of them have such fascinating or interesting stories, whatever quiet life they lead.

I want this type of personality to be exposed to other people. Most filmmakers try to make the kind of movie they have wanted to see but haven't seen yet, so they're going out and making it.

It can be very selfish, and you can end up alienating people. Yeah, I mean, there are plenty of stories that I want to do that I know I'd have to do in a studio way, to be able to do it bigger, and that stuff excites me.

Napoleon and Bronco were smaller stories about smaller characters and needed to be done that way. I absolutely love this movie. One of my personal cult classics.

A lot of people either slept on this movie or have no idea it exists or even that it came from the Hess brothers who also did Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, 2 of my favorite movies.

This movie has all of the awkward hilarity of Napoleon dynamic and then some. The same actor who played nachos sidekick is also in this film and is maybe the funniest character.

So, I can't stand Napolean Dynamite. I believe the same people did this movie. My husband and I ran across this one day a few years back and for some reason it was just so weird and strangely funny that we couldn't keep our eyes from the screen.

I am almost ashamed to say that I love this movie. We decided we had to have it. If you like weird strange funny humor then this will be your movie.

Give it a few minutes and remember your mom put a hot water bottle on the seat for you! I feel ill-equipped to review the movie, because I don't want my lack of professional movie-reviewing skills to detract from how great it is.

I'll do my best. Taste in comedy is of course, very subjective. I would say use whether or not you liked Napoleon Dynamite as a baseline for whether you will like this movie.

You either like cilantro or you don't. You either like subtly silly movies that are quirky without being creepy, or you don't. This is an underdog becomes the hero story, played out in the world of people who are in the margins of our culture: homeschoolers, sci-fi fans, dwellers of geodesic dome houses.

I don't want to say, "When Chevalier plagiarizes Benjamin's novel, hilarity ensues", because the hilarity begins in the first two minutes.

Like a Robert Altman movie, that gets you into a world you've only ever given a cursory glance from the outside, Gentleman Broncos gives you a real taste of the world of homeschoolers: the doting, struggling, sometimes oddball parents, the usually great relationship between homeschooling parents and their children, the confidence, misplaced or not, homeschooled kids have that they can do what they aspire to do.

While not typical, there are certain great little details that homeschoolers and readers of Mother Earth News, will recognize.

The plot, the dialogue, the action aside, these sweet little tidbits make watching this movie like eating a really great tira misu. All the performances, from every actor, are just perfect, as is the casting.

However, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the really standout performance from Sam Rockwell, who plays the protagonist of Benjamin's novel in the Benjamin's and Chevalier's duelling versions of it.

When is Sam Rockwell going to get an Oscar, already? Its hard to imagine a worse movie than this- even if a filmmaker was high on crack or meth a movie that they made would be more entertaining.

This movie is so bad- it really defies words to describe how truly awful it is. I keep wondering " who thought it was a good idea to invest millions of dollars in producing this"?

And how did director Jared Hess - who had so much success with Napoleon Dynamite make such a crappy film? Running jokes "anious" as a suffix and constantly referring to mammary glands, really isnt funny to anyone over Run as fast as you can from this waste of film..
