It is stylish, but it tries a bit too hard. The plot in confusing, even when the movie was over I wasn't sure what it really was about.
Fortunately, the acting is solid. Gary Oldman and Lena Olin are terrific. This just falls in a category of films from the early 90's that tried to reinvent film noir.

Jul 24, It all went wrong when he met a female russian hit-woman I loved this movie. Absolutley loved it. Gary Oldman is amazing in it, a really amazing performance.
The story is introuging and Lena Olin has to be one of the coolest female villians Oh and that beginning and the ending, loved the way they had made those Hell is when you should have walked away, but you didn't.

Jack Grimaldi: People think that Hell is fire and brimstone and the Devil poking you in the butt with a pitchfork, but it's not. Jack Grimaldi: Maybe it was just his imagination, but whenever he'd pull up that plate, he'd hear a It started out small, with the first 65 grand.
And then it got bigger. Pretty soon it was the only thing he heard. Pretty soon, all he could think about was feeding the hole.
He didn't think about when he was a kid. He didn't think about the guys who he started who were still on the up-and-up.
He didn't think about the dreams he had with Natalie. He didn't think about those Feds lying there. Instead of being sent to prison for the murder, he is given a commendation.
This frees him to begin a new life in the West, under the identity of "Jim Daugherty". The final scene shows Jack living alone in a remote desert town and working as a bartender.
He longs for Natalie's return and laments the loss of his old life. Jon Bon Jovi wrote the song " Always " for the film but withheld the track after he was dissatisfied with a preview screening.
Bon Jovi in recalled, "The script was great: the movie wasn't. Chicago Sun-Times critic Roger Ebert said that while Oldman is "unsurpassable" in portraying depraved characters, the film is "an exercise in overwrought style and overwritten melodrama, and proof that a great cast cannot save a film from self-destruction.
He added, "It will be a shame if audiences don't get the joke". In a retrospective review, Dennis Schwartz referred to the film as a "senseless, tasteless and demented postmodern noir", but commended Olin's "menacing" turn as well as the initial interaction between Oldman and Scheider.
