The absolute worst of the franchise. I gave this 3 stars because it is noticeably better than the 4th Pirates movie, however, it still lacks the magic of the first three.
Again we set sail with our beloved Jack Sparrow! Alas he is not the Jack we thought we knew, nay he is a mere caricature of his former self.
To be quite honest Depp's performance in this movie was not the spotlight performance I thought it would be. He was often outshined by the two new comers, and even Barbosa, in both dialogue and lovability.
The storyline in this movie, Orlando Bloom's son ging on a voyage to release his father from the clutches of The Flying Dutchman was a much more to the heart tale than something about mermaids.
I think more so than the story they were trying to convey, the execution was excellent. So why 3 stars instead of 4?
Because overall the movie was lackluster. The first time I watched it I watched it alone, and was only mildly interested and invested.
It was only when I watched it with my Family that it became a better movie. There is a word for that that's just on the tip of my tongue I watched this as an Amazon rental.
The first half dragged, literally, so tedious, including the wayyyy too long dragging pun intended of the bank through the streets of St Martin.
The exposition to show where we were and how we got there included the young but boring new young couple. They added nothing and I hoped for our old earthy friends Captain Barbossa and his monkey, who did appear but briefly, early on.
Jack Sparrow was a pale shadow of himself as well, although how he began and got his name was a lift. I was going to give this 3 stars max, but then like being at some operas, the next act took off.
Everybody got some energy, and the story line coalesced. Javier Bardem's part improved, Depp woke up and Geoffrey Rush came to the fore.
The two romantic leads - young, pretty, but - meh - no great shakes. But it rallied and came together and I enjoyed the last hour - a solid 4 stars.

Comments 5 9. It is hard to tell if the Pirates franchise will ever truly be over until Johnny Depp decides he does not want to do any more of them.
They make Disney a ton of money, so as long as he is willing to resurrect the character of Jack Sparrow, there is always a good chance another movie will come along at some point.
This one, however, if it is the final movie in the series, does a good job telling its own story while having callbacks to and essentially finishing the Will and Elizabeth story both Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightly have cameos in the film.
The main focus of the story is the search for Poseidon's trident, which allows whoever wields it power over the seas.
Javier Bardem is the new "big bad" of the franchise, Captain Espinoza, who has a history with Jack Sparrow.
Geoffrey Rush also reprises his role as Barbosa, and many of the original supporting characters appear as well e.
The other new characters include the son of Will and Elizabeth, Henry Turner, played by Brenton Thwaites and Carina Smyth played by Kaya Scodelario who is an astronomer accused of being a witch, who is trying to find the trident to follow her father's map left for her.
The younger actor's roles were clearly meant to mirror, but not outright copy, the roles of Bloom and Knightly in the first movie. For those who get the 4K blu-ray, the movie looks and sounds great, as you would expect.
The UHD disc has just the movie, and the regular Blu-ray disc has the extras. This includes over an hour of making-of and behind-the-scenes material, a gag reel, deleted scenes, and a couple of previews.
A pretty good amount, especially with less and less bonus material being put out with the physical discs these days.
Overall, I think the movie is good, even if it is derivative at times of parts of the other movies. Depp can easily step back into what has become an iconic character, without missing a beat.
It would have been nice to incorporate Orlando Bloom into the movie more, as there was certainly a pretty easy way to do so, but from what I remember reading back when it was announced that the movie would be made, he was not really interested in more than a cameo role.
While I do not think that the movie is as good as The Curse of The Black Pearl, I do think that it was on par with, or better than, the other sequels.
I do think with a running time of just over two hours, it did not feel like the movie was dragging on too long. I definitely think it is worth checking out.

This is number 3 for me. On Stranger Tides beats it to the 2 spot because I also read the book well before the movie came out and enjoyed both.
I love pirates, I love the Monkey Island games, and I remember riding the ride as a child. I even enjoyed some of the cameos and felt it was a good movie to end it.
And yes, I don't really think they needed to have Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley in the film but it was still funny to see them there. Plot, without spoilers, an undead Captain is trying to find and kill Jack.

They are some of my favorite films to watch over and over again. I have to say compared to the last film with Blackbeard awfully boring and didn't have the same feeling as the other films in the series , this is times better.
I loved that Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly made appearances in this film and really brought their story full circle. There were a couple of my favorite characters missing from this film, which I had read that they opted out of the movie.
I was annoyed with the Carina character. She was just kind of meh and kept repeating the same things over again. Personally I love the 2nd and 3rd films in the series.
I find them to the funniest and most entertaining, packed with lots of adventure. All of the elements, none of the heart.
In the long, painful succession of sequeldom that has become this saga -- the final installment we can mercifully hope neatly wrapped-up all the loose ends from prior films in a two-hour travesty that should have gone straight to Disney DVD.

Alright, I'm done with the maritime puns. The story never gains a flavorful pace as Hans Zimmer attempts to ratchet up the intensity with his tried-and-true score to save the film -- on multiple occasions.
When the action does build, it's slow and painful making the plot lines painfully obvious to even the most casual of moviegoers.
There are periods in this film in which one could get up from the couch, go and make dinner and come back without having missed any real substantive story-building.
One can only assume that all the more familiar and exciting stories of sea lore and legend have already been brought to the silver screen in prior iterations, or perhaps the writing crew decided to skip this installment -- allowing the monkey and his cousins to cobble together a story from random cards.
As for the actors Depp who spent twenty minutes at the beginning trying to decide if he was Jack Sparrow or the Mad Hatter seemed to sputter apathetically going through the motions as Jack Sparrow and then hoping the director would pan away from him while he tucked at a bit more rum.
