The scenario isn't as over-the-top and therefore seems somewhat more believable, despite the stupid non-science gaffs which flow faster than lava throughout the course of the movie.
The threat feels more real and the scope is more intimate, despite the destruction being on a larger scale. Linda Hamilton turns in yet another strong female lead performance, as the mayor of the doomed town nestled at the base of the pissed-off Peak, while scientific volcano voyeurs including the always dependable Charles Hallahan help round out a solid ensemble cast.
Presented in its proper theatrically-correct 2. Audio track is clean, clear and strong. If you already have the DVD I still feel that this upgrade is worth a double-dip.
The visual crispness of the hi-def format makes the whole spectacle look that much better. They both turn in good performances, as do the rest of the cast.
Characterisation is strong, which is a must for a meaningful ensemble cast film. Special effects are exceptional, though in a few instances they come off as dated, but not to the point of ridicule.
The story is good, for the most part, as is the script. Pacing is very nice. Unlike a lot of disaster movies, this one starts off with some excitement that becomes part of the character development, and then the introductions to the rest of the cast and setting up the situation come along, and while it's a tad slow at that point, I never found it to be boring.
This movie is like a study in why telegraphing is not good. I understand that some telegraphing is pretty much unavoidable. Example: Mayor Wando Linda Hamilton has kids.
I don't need to watch the movie to know they'll be at the heart of, possibly even the cause of, a crisis. This is part of the game, and doesn't reflect poorly on the movie.
However, this movie takes telegraphing to another level entirely. We're introduced to Mayor Wando's Mother-in-law, who has a mountain lodge and she insists that the mountain would 'never hurt' her.
I can already tell that she's going to refuse to leave her home, thus placing others at risk in an attempt to rescue her. We see early on that there's a developer with deep pockets who may want to invest in the town near the mountain.
As soon as I hear that, I know that in order to woo the developer, any danger from the mountain will be drastically downplayed, thus placing others at risk.
It's made obvious that Dr. Harry Dalton's Pierce Brosnan colleagues believe that he tends to be overly cautious.
I don't need to be a rocket scientist to know that they'll ignore his warnings until it's too late, thus placing others at risk.
The icing on the cake was when we're told that a piece of equipment randomly has a distress beacon built into it, and that nugget of information is apropos of absolutely nothing whatsoever at the time we hear of it.
Gee, y'think that'll be coming in handy later in the movie? It's superior to both its contemporary, 'Volcano,' and the far, Far more recent 'Pompeii.
Disaster fans should really give this a try and not assume that just because it's an older film it won't look any good when compared to more recent disaster fare.
If you love cheesy disaster films especially ones from the 90s then this is the movie for you. It's shot in a gorgeous location, takes place in the fictional town of Dantes Peak and has humor and heart in addition to outdated 90s technology and a much younger Pierce Brosnan.
