This makes it sort of a mixed bag in some regards. In one way, the first John Wick was such a pure, contained film. On the other hand, there was a mythology hinted at, and what we see expanded on here is so damn good.
Yeah the action is great, especially a really fun scene in a room of mirrors, but what makes it good is the expansion of the universes mythos.
We see more of the assassins world and their culture. What's really interesting to me is how there's no real audience surrogate either, we're just thrown in and expected to catch up with everything.
And you are able to because it's all shown with expert visual storytelling. The visuals are great, the action is great, the mythos is great, it's another great entry.
Michael M Super Reviewer. Dec 29, I'm glad I did -- I think, cuz no more any nightmares -- yet. I like Keanu Reeves, and I thought he'd disappeared.
Yeah, I get that he loves his Mustang, but when those bastards kill his puppy, even I wanted all of them dead -- although I gotta say these movies were both kinda more violent than I care for.
Dude, when you've got John Wick tied up, why in the whole wide world do you have John Wick tied up? Geez, Louise, you know he's a killing machine, so when you have the advantage, why don't you kill him immediately?
Kill him before he inevitably kills you. Think, folks, think. Hollywood, I tell you. Wick's guaranteed target is the head. Every single time.
A hundred times in each movie. So even if he's shot someone five or six or more times already, and broken every bone in the guy's body, notice how he still makes sure to plant one in the head as a final "Let me make sure this guy's dead.
Is it just my perception that most guys can't aim, but John Wick could hit a fly sitting on the moon? Of the hundred and two or hundred and three folks he kills -- in each movie -- maybe two or three of them can shoot with a teeny tiny bit of accuracy.
Lucky for John Wick, because the bullets are flying every-freakin-where. A word of advice: Don't get into knife fight with John Wick.
You will lose. And then he might shoot you in the head, just to make sure you've lost. John Wick is definitely into the martial arts, and having watched University Lab School grad Enson Inoue mixed martial artist in Japan specializing in Brazilian jiujitsu , I know that Wick employs the arm bar on several occasions, although he definitely uses a mix of types, not just jiujitsu alone.
The same way someone like Jet Li mixes styles to fit the purpose and the choreography of a particular situation.
Oh, and I don't think you can understand some of Two without seeing One, so I suggest you watch One first. Oh, and Three is on the way.
Oh, and he does steal a new dog in Two, and his totaled Mustang is in the shop getting repaired in anticipation of Three. John Leguizamo boasts he can fix the Mustang, but you know they're just gonna use a new one in the next movie.
John Leguizamo is no car repair guy. He's an actor, for goodness sake. Yeah, they'll just use a brand new Mustang that looks like his old one.
I'm pretty sure. Cuz that's a hell of a lot of body work. Plus they would have to find a driver's side door, plus who knows what, yeah?
One little anecdote. My mom and dad really wanted to see Speed, but it had already left the theaters. How they got turned onto it, I don't know.
The three of us watched it together. When it ended my mom said, "That Reeves boy, very good-looking. Too bad he can't act.
Can he act? I don't know. I like him no matter. Lanning : Super Reviewer. Feb 13, You know, oftentimes, being gone so long, I've wondered if I'm going to remember how to do this.
It's silly, really, but that's something I've legitimately thought about during this forced hiatus.
I may be a bit rusty. Then again, you can never be rusty if you were never good in the first place, amirite? With my usual self-deprecating humor out of the way, why don't we move on to the review.
And what a hell of a movie did I pick to come back with. The original John Wick was an unexpected success with both audiences and critics.
It offered kinetic, and very violent, action for adults. I don't wanna say it opened the door, but its success made it OK for major studios to take a gamble on R-rated action films.
So the risks have paid off. I don't wanna say that it can all be traced back to the original John Wick's sleeper success, but it certainly helped a bit.
Which brings us to my thoughts on the first movie. I was a big fan of the action, I thought it was very well executed pardon the pun and the editing was tremendous.
The noir vibe of the film also helped quite a bit. I wouldn't say it's the most unique action film of all time, in terms of how it's set up, but it uses its influences to create something that still feels fresh and its own.
The main problem that I had with the first film is that I found the whole movie to be too one-dimensional. And while I enjoyed the action tremendously, it didn't really blow my mind like both Raid movies or Fury Road did.
I just felt that the movie gave you what was necessary in order to get you invested and then gave you very little else in terms of world-development and exploring the assassins' guild that John once belonged to.
Having watched this film, now it comes across that this was by design. Because this movie definitely makes up for that as it explores the guild, its hierarchy and their rules while still keeping the same kinetic and exciting action that made the first movie such a success.
One of my biggest worries, and this was something I thought about as I was watching the film itself, is that expanding the world of John Wick and its characters to that of a more international approach, let's just say that John owes a favor to the man who helped get him out of the hit man life and that mission takes him to Rome, might have over-complicated things?
I don't know if that's what I'm trying to say, but the first movie was a much more personal vendetta for Mr.
Wick, as a result of the murder of his dog that his wife got him prior to dying. They did take that away here and replaced it with a more worldwide approach, but I don't think it actually hurt the film quite a bit.
While it's still not as personal of a 'story', if you can call it that, Wick is still very much haunted by the death of his wife and the movie does a good job at keeping that alive in its sequel.
In most movies it would just be a plot device that would be forgotten in the sequel, but not here and that's certainly very welcome. John escapes to the catacombs, where he is ambushed by Ares and Santino's henchmen, who intend to "tie up loose ends" by killing him.
After killing most of the henchmen, John is pursued by Cassian. Their intense battle is halted when they crash into the reception area of the Rome Continental, which — like the New York Continental — prohibits any "business" on its grounds.
As the two share a drink, John explains why he had to kill Gianna. Nevertheless, Cassian vows revenge for Gianna's death, promising to kill John quickly as a sign of professional respect.
Eventually, Cassian confronts John in the subway. John wins the fight and mortally wounds Cassian, but leaves him alive out of professional respect.
Injured and desperate, John seeks help from an underground crime lord known as the Bowery King, whose subordinates treat John's injuries and guide him to an art museum where Santino is holding a gala.
John dispatches Santino's henchmen and chases Santino through a mirror exhibit in the museum, where he kills the rest of Santino's men and kills Ares in a final fight.
He pursues Santino, who flees to the Continental, where he smugly makes it clear that he intends to remain indefinitely in its sanctuary and he will never cancel Wick's bounty.
Despite Winston's warnings, John shoots and kills Santino in the Continental lounge. The next day, Winston sends for John and explains that, per the High Table, the contract on John has been doubled and offered globally.
As a consequence of killing Santino on Continental grounds, Winston declares John " excommunicado ," terminating all his access and privileges to underworld resources.
However, Winston delays announcing John's excommunication and global bounty by one hour to give him a head start and provides him with a marker for future use.
Before leaving, John advises Winston to make it known that whoever tries to come after him will be killed. John walks away with his dog as Winston makes a call enacting John's "excommunicado", to be activated in one hour.
As the contract is activated and cellphones ring all around him, John breaks into a run. Additionally, it was reported that Kolstad would return to write the screenplay.
Reeves and Stahelski appeared in a minute Aol. It was announced that Keanu Reeves , Leitch, and Stahelski would return, with filming set to begin in late Studios shots were in New Jersey.
Tyler Bates and Joel J. Richard returned to write and compose the film's soundtrack. Australia was one of the last major countries to receive the film, with a release on May The website's critical consensus reads, " John Wick: Chapter 2 does what a sequel should—which in this case means doubling down on the non-stop, thrillingly choreographed action that made its predecessor so much fun.
Scott Tobias of Uproxx said the film improved upon the original, writing: "For better or worse—though mostly for better—it's a full-scale assault on the senses, constantly pushing itself to greater feats of excess.
At this rate, a third John Wick might trigger the apocalypse". Writing for Time magazine in February Stephanie Zacharek stated: "The pleasures of John Wick: Chapter 2 may be even greater than those of its predecessor—itself a symphonic achievement in scrappy, balls-out, action filmmaking—because in this one, there's no puppy murder to endure John Wick: Chapter 2 asks the classic pulp question—Are human beings worth saving?
Colbert writing for Screen Rant saw secret societies as a significant motif in the film. In his article "The World of John Wick Explained", Colbert stated: " John Wick introduced audiences to a dark, polished and sharply dressed, underground criminal society full of assassins who mostly abide by an unspoken code of conduct and two explicit rules.
While the first movie told a more intimate story that only hinted at the larger world of this secret society, John Wick: Chapter Two takes the titular character through several of the corners of this complex underworld, revealing even more about the world of John Wick.
While very few of these customs are explicitly explained, there are still enough hints about the inner functionings of the various entities presented, giving us enough puzzle pieces to put together a loose sketch of this mysterious world of assassins".
Ignatiy Vishnevetsky of The A. Club wrote that it "lacks the first film's domino-effect momentum". In part, he praised the action scenes as "entertainingly surreal".
In October , Stahelski stated that a third film, titled John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum , is in the works [45] and in June it was reported that Kolstad will return to write the screenplay.
