For the most part, it's an enjoyable film. I don't know how closely the writers attempted to stay to Austen's work, but one of the main issues to the film is the overabundance of characters.

We are introduced to almost every single character within the first few minutes via opening credits, and it became overwhelming as a viewer.

I caught on to the characters after a while, but trying to remember everyone's names was quite the challenge, especially when they all talk, dress, and look relatively the same.

With that said, it's far and away Kate Beckinsale's film as she plays the infamous Lady Susan Vernon. The story mainly focuses on Vernon's attempt to give her daughter and herself a new match, after being recently widowed.

The beauty being that you don't truly know if she's being manipulative or sincere, which is why the abundance of characters actually works in the film's favor.

Distracting the audience with new characters scene to scene keeps our attention away from what Susan is up to, hence surprising us with the next reveal.

I also appreciated the film's keen sense of humor at just the right moments. There are moments when the comedy could steer towards over-the-top, but veteran director Whit Stillman kept it from getting out of hand.

De onderkoelde, licht ironische stijl van regisseur Whit Stillman past uitstekend bij de verfilming van dit verhaal van Jane Austen.

Kate Beckinsale is daarnaast geweldig in de doortrapte hoofdrol. De show wordt echter gestolen door Tom Bennett, hier hilarisch als de sympathieke maar oliedomme rijke stinkerd waar Beckinsale haar zinnen op gezet heeft.

Het heeft allemaal niet veel om het lijf en er is weinig dat we niet eerder en beter gezien hebben in eerdere Austen-verfilmingen, maar de subtiele humor en het sporadische venijn zijn verfrissend.

Goeie film over een weduwe die haar schoonfamilie bezoekt op zoek naar een partij voor haar dochter en haarzelf. Het begin met de vele introducties is wat ingewikkeld, maar hierna ontvouwt het verhaal zich prima.

Een vermakelijk hoofdpersonage die iedereen en alles naar haar hand weet te zetten. Een redelijk vlot tempo en spitse dialogen. Ruim voldoende voor deze film als je je kan inleven in die tijd.

Hoe een vrouw alles en iedereen manipuleert om niet uit het aristocratische wereldje te vallen. Optimaal gebruik maken van je looks en intelligentie.

Briljant vertolkt door Kate. Herzien, en nu zonder rumoerige Iron Maiden fans in Arnhem. Dit blijft voor mij, als Austen fan, een bloedeloze, humorloze en vooral emotieloze film.

Vlotte dialogen redden de film van de 1 sterrenstatus. Geen moment wordt het echt aantrekkelijk. Typische Jane Austen film.

Ogenschijnlijk licht, maar onder de oppervlakte zit meer dan je in eerste instantie zou denken. Doet wat denken aan Emma , ook zo'n Austen verfilming waarin een vrouw aan het manipuleren slaat, maar waar het personage van Paltrow in die film niet kwaadaardig is, blijkt Lady Susan alhier een enorm vals wicht.

De mooie, lieftallige Beckinsale zet Susan redelijk neer, doch een meer talentvollere actrice had nog meer uit deze cruciale rol kunnen halen.

Er word enorm veel gepraat en gepraat, en gepraat , blijft lang wachten voordat de troeven duidelijk op tafel liggen, en er worden te veel personages opgevoerd voor de anderhalf uur dat dit duurt, waarvan sommige geen duidelijke functie in het verhaal hebben de normaal bezienswaardige Stephen Fry loopt hier bijvoorbeeld in een korte rol als een jan met de korte achternaam rond.
