Vivid characters, so perfectly played, who i felt as though i knew almost immediately, and for whom I developed strong feelings - for better or worse - just as quickly.
That's rare. In contrast to the quick appreciation of the movie's characters, the story progressed at a slow swagger, a pace befitting a hot, humid Miami.
It was a movie of moments; blink at the wrong time and you could miss out on that intimate understanding I mentioned above. As many have said, this movie is experienced as much with your eyes as with your ears.
A script of subtle, physical and emotional choreography more so than of words, sentences and paragraphs. I'm not sure why, but this movie left me feeling like, somewhere along the line, I let my life get unnecessarily complicated.
That I, too, should be more about the moments. That I should pay more attention to the subtle, physical and emotional choreography that surrounds me, and worry less about the words, so often misleading or misunderstood.
In a world of fake news, clickbait, catchphrases, product placement and the next best thing, this movie brought simplicity, depth and authenticity.
No catchphrase required. The first time I saw Moonlight, I was too busy watching the movie to appreciate it.
I was following plot, thinking ahead, wondering what was going to happen. I was angry at Chiron's mom, frustrated by teen bullies and worried about Chiron's day-to-day life.
I thought the ending was abrupt and not exceedingly hopeful. I couldn't have been more wrong. And what I saw is a near masterpiece of film making.
The acting is superb, but so subtle that it's easily missed. Quiet nuances, a look, a movement. It is the art, the things unsaid, the gentle touches that makes Moonlight a truly great motion picture.
This film is so good at taking complex topics and complex emotions and describing them simply with simple words. The acting is superb.
I can still see the sweet quiet boy inside the big muscular adult. The mother who knows exactly her circumstances. The friend who is sorry but not completely sure what to do thereafter and finding his way.
The writing is superb.
